The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, NBB of C  is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to revive the sport in the country. This was demonstrated by the leadership of the boxing body at the weekend, when its President, Dr Rafiu Ladipo took his sponsorship drive to the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Oke Afa, Ejigbo in Lagos.

As a prelude, leader of the church, Primate Babtunde Elijah Ayodele was appointed a Life Patron.

Giving reasons for the rare gesture to a church leader, Ladipo praised the man of God for his untiring effort at working for the success of Nigerian teams. “Primate Ayodele has been part of the successes of Nigerian sports. In the Supporters Club, we don’t only support our national teams by only singing and drumming, we also pray and fast for the success of our teams. We worship in churches and mosques. We go spiritual when things go rough and Primate Ayodele has always been there for us.”

Responding the church leader said he was elated by the gesture. “It’s a privilege. I didn’t know I deserve such honour.”

Answering questions from reporters, Primate Ayodele said, “from now on, Nigerian boxing will go places. Indeed, boxing will override football, in terms of popularity and in no time we will produce a world champion.”

He also had words of encouragement for the Super Eagles who kicked off their 2019 AFCON qualifiers with a 2-0 home loss to South Africa last weekend. “Nigeria must qualify for both the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. We will pray and work in every way humanly possible to ensure this comes to pass.”
